Ilminster Entertainment Society Sweeps Western Area Final with Eighth Consecutive County Win
The Ilminster Entertainment Society returned home from the Western Area Final of the All England Theatre Festival on 17 May with two of the competition's most prestigious awards, extending a remarkable eight year unbroken run of county level victories.
Performing at the Merlin Theatre in Frome, the society staged Knockin on Daves Door, a one act comedy built around the premise of Bob Dylan turning up at entirely the wrong suburban address. Director Ken Cooper shaped the material into something genuinely sharp, drawing out layers of wit that had the audience fully engaged throughout.
Mick Glynn carried the lead role with assured physical comedy, his portrayal of Dylan grounded and consistently funny rather than reliant on caricature. Paula Denning, Mick Crook, Ash Stockton and Rosie Hawkins each contributed performances that served the ensemble without anyone overreaching.
The judges awarded the society the Broughton Chatwin Memorial Trophy for best overall production and the Dennis Dunsford Award for stage presentation. The double win means the group will travel to Leicester to represent the entire West of England at the National Final.
The society operates from the Warehouse Theatre in Ilminster entirely independently. That a small Somerset town produces work of this standard year after year, on a voluntary basis and without institutional support, is something worth acknowledging. The eight year streak speaks for itself.
